Anne and I Get Married 1982
We got married at the Colonnade in Cain Park, Cleveland Heights, OH, by a justice of the peace. It was a much bigger affair than my first wedding. Anne’s family attended, as did many of mine, including my maternal grandmother, who flew in from Boston with Mom’s older sister Milly, and her younger sister, Louise, Uncle Gene, Mom, Dad, and friends like Dale K. and Jim T., friends from work, and Bob and Jan (friends of Jubal – my old band with Guy and Jim), who came in from Nags Head on the Outer Banks, North Carolina. Prior to the wedding, I took a few days off and spent the time with Bob and Jan on their fishing boat off Nags Head on the Atlantic side of the Outer Banks. I guess I was meditating on whether I really wanted to do this again… being married… being married to Anne. After five years with her, I was still in love, so I went ahead with it. You may have noticed that I’m not referring to her as ‘Annie’ anymore. At some point during this time, she informed me that she didn’t like being called ‘Annie’ anymore, wanted her ‘adult’ name used. So, of course, I complied.
Anne’s best friend from Hiram, Betsy, was her Maid of Honor. My Best Man was my brother, Guy. Kristen and Ian were in the procession (spreading flower pedals? … I think).
We had the reception in the backyard of our residentce on Hampshire Rd. Dave, our landlord, attended, too. All the eats and drinks were provided by Anne’s and my friends. Overall, it was a pretty good party, but didn’t end well. Anne had a confrontation with her mother, who had been against the wedding from the beginning. Anne was crying and pretty much inconsolable for the rest of the day. We took our honeymoon the week after the wedding… We went to Detroit, crossed the Windsor Bridge into Canada, and spent the week traveling the north side of Lake Erie all the way to Toronto, then down through Niagara Falls, and home on the southern side of the lake. It was a very nice trip, and Anne finally calmed down. We made it a beautiful and memorable occasion.
