Back Into the Void – Part 1
A little over a year later, Kinetico laid me off. When they gave me my Exit Interview, they said they didn’t need a technical writer anymore, that the engineers’ secretaries would transcribe the engineering notes, and that would be good enough. So, there is no need for an actual ‘technical writer’… Yes, that sent me into another tail spin.
By that time, I was living in an apartment in Kent, OH, near Kent State University. I had moved there from Ohio City the previous fall. Caitlin, Dylan, and Sean frequently spent weekends with me.
Also, by this time, I had pretty much quit Judo compatition and was working my way up in Aikido and Tai Chi Chuan. Sean and Dylan were working out with me a couple of times a week in Aikido. Sean was learning Tai Chi from me as well. Caitlin had very little interest in it, and I didn’t push her. It was her decision. I didn’t push the boys either, but they liked it and were eager for the workouts.
I was also playing bass in a trio (basically) that we named Rock Bottom. The band consisted of Chuck P., me, and an assortment of drummers. There were too many to count. I don’t remember their names. None stayed with the band long enough to etch themselves into my memory. Chuck was lead and rhythm guitar and lead singer, I did the bass and backups. We also had a sax-man, Gene, who sat in and jammed along with us from time to time. We played a lot of old Cream, blues, and blues interpretations of classic rock tunes. We didn’t make a lot of money, but during that period, every little bit helped.
