Irises
bearded Irises
purple and white
yellow and burgundy
rust and pink
and brilliant white
a fixture of
temperate climes
flags signaling
fond nostalgia
the clarion of
summer vacations
the ending of spring
and the sum … sum
summertime blues
yet to come

I love Irises, but don’t get to see them anymore, other than on the internet. They’re not native to the high Sonoran Desert, my current home. Our backyard in Ashland, KY, had donzens of them in the late spring and summer.

Nice poem, brings back childhood memories.
I have some yellow and purple iris that have just finished blooming. Now, a red hollyhock near my back porch is in full bloom. I think I’d like living in the desert, but I’d miss my flowers.

Thanks for reading and commenting, Wren! I’m pleased you found some nostalgia in it. The flora of the desert is beautiful too. Some of the desert blooms are breathtakingly. But as you would, I miss the flowers of the temperate climes, hollyhocks for sure…; -)

I’ve been through the Sonoran Desert a couple of times when the cacti are blooming. What a beautiful sight!

Yes, and the wild poppies, brittlebush, desert mallow, greasewood, fairydusters, and oliander, to name a few…; -)

Every environment has its own unique beauty. Living all my life in the South, I think when I retire, I’d like to try someplace new. From what I’ve seen of Arizona, I think I’d like it there.
