Monsoon Watch

hot and dry
more than 40 days
no rain, not a trace

promised monsoons
just a faint hope as
three-digit days abound

we may see one coming
a dense, dark shadow
cloud-bank charging

a broad, dark wave
about to break over our
heads and parched land

hitting so hard and fast
tons of water dumped
hits the ground running

off the surface to the washes
and away – taking any and all
loose detritus to a wash-grave

monsoon hits fast and furious
the deluge does not penetrate
strikes and rolls away

leaving desperate life
longing for another pass
the next monsoon foray
