Cognitive Dissonance

hallmark of humanity
oligarchs marching us
to extinction’s precipice

claiming we’re all family
but they, the patri and matriarchs
bestow blessings

only on those who concede
kiss the ass, boot, and ring
pain and poverty for the rest

decry the inevitable backlash
climate, human/animal rights activists
attacking our fascist gatekeepers

as our mother, Earth, rapidly declines
her blood, oceans, lakes, and steams
turned poison by our owners’ greed

microplastics and heavy metals in everything
from food, water, and air to our own bodies
ravaged with stress and disease

change is inevitable, but what will it be
extinction sooner than later, or
timely overthrow of fascist regimes

disappointing, yes, it is
so close your eyes and pretend
all will be fine in the end…
