I wrote this for an open mic at Brady’s Café in Kent, OH, where I read my newest poems once a month, back in the late 1980s. I hope it’s not too shocking…; -)~ –LE
It’s Better Than Sex
That’s an intriguing idea. But if true –
Why so many new feet on the wheel, and
Why so many new shoes?
Why the millions in health club dues?
Why the millions for mouthwash,
Deodorant, and facial goo’s?
If there is anything better than sex,
Then where’s our patent, our shares, our cash?
We’ll export to the third world market, you bet,
Our better-than-sex, anti-procreation gas.
Me thinks the truth is very clear, it’s plain.
Those who make this questionable claim –
Are the very same ones, who can’t get laid.

Brady’s was right next door to Kent State University. The monthly poety open mic was frequented by many of the students from Kent’s poetry department. You had to get there early to sign the readers list. The readings started at 7pm and usually didn’t end till well past midnight. The line to get in usually wound around the building and into its parking lot. They did a brisk business of pastries and coffee those nights.
