The Tucson Loop In Spring
the dazzling morning sun
tilts in 30 degrees
off the eastern horizon
with Aries as backdrop
long shadows cross
the north/south path
and the cloudless bright
blue sky goes on forever
reclaimed water cuts
a zigzag path down
the western edge of the
otherwise dry Santa Cruz
the surrounding mountains
seen through the bright
green veils of new
Mesquite leaves
a couple of roadrunners
decoy us away from
their roosting tree
then return once we’ve passed
a small skink sits up on the path
to play ‘chicken’ with me
streaking stage left when
we almost collide
a noisy flock of blackbirds
sifts through the garbage
littering the path at the
Grant Rd. bottleneck
today’s glimpse of the
Tucson Loop in the beginning
of Spring on the high
Sonoran Desert
