Jerry Lee Lewis’s 62nd Birthday Party – Memoir Addendum
In late September, 1997, I took my last vacation from Kinetico (didn’t know it would be my last at the time…), where I’d worked since ‘92 as a technical writer of manuals, proposals, and the like for their industrial water purification and reverse osmosis business (mostly for computer chip manufacturing).
At the time, I was in an electric trio. We called ourselves Rock Bottom. I sang and played bass. The lead vocalist and guitarist, Chuck P., was an engineer I’d met through a friend at Hiram. It was he and I who went to Jerry Lee’s party. Chuck was friendly with one of those in Jerry Lee’s close circle and thus got us an invitation. The whole thing took us a week. We stopped and toured Graceland on the way.
The party was held on September 28, 1997, at his ranch in Nesbit MS. It was very crowded, with kids, cake, horses and lots of music. Jerry Lee even played a couple of tunes himself. He also took some of us on a tour of his garage to view all his cars (he had many, but I for one, was not impressed … to me, an expensive and irrelevant collection). I took lots of pictures of the whole affair. It was not as interesting as I’d originally expected.
I went back to work the morning after we got back. Aside from the pictures, it seemed as though it hadn’t really happened. I guess lots of events end that way. At least they did for me…

Back in the day, my sister was a big fan of Jerry Lee. I wasn’t, but if memory serves me correctly, I bought an album of his for one song I liked, thinking I might like others. Well, I didn’t. Just a couple of days ago, after my sister posted a Jerry Lee song on Facebook, I asked if she remembered the time I traded my single Jerry Lee album to her for a Waylon Jennings’ (who I loved listening to) one I didn’t have. She did.
And the cars wouldn’t have impressed me either. I drive a 2013 Ford Edge I bought new, and have been driving ever since. As long as a vehicle is dependable and gets me where I want to go, that’s all that matters to me. But, I guess rich people have to have something to waste money on.

I had an ’05 Ford Escort that I bought used in ’08. It was totaled in front of our house at 3:AM on New Years morning of 2011. I had another used one before I bought my current car, a 2018 Chevy Spark, which I’m hoping will be the last one I ever need to buy… and it’s been running perfectly since the purchase… I drove it to Tucson from Ashland KY in ’18 for a visit and then again in ’19 for our permanent move. No, that’s not true, I towed it behind the Uhaul I rented for the move…; -)
