September Morning Ride

This is based on my Tuesday morning ride – 9/23/25. 26 miles in a little less than 3 hrs. Yes, I was quite ‘burnt’ and exhosted by the time I got home…; -)

September Morning Ride

starring into the deep blue void
a single thought-bubble-cloud
presiding over mountains and sky

riding a sun-baked
and blistered, faded side street
a loud truck tailing

ride the western side
the path south a long incline
by riverbed scrub

then vistas northward
downhill riding, just coasting
new bridge, turn around

my blackened skin splits
like a charcoal-burnt hotdog
that’s what it feels like

two large black buzzards
lounging beside the bike-path
give us the cold eye

then sprint to take off
five-foot black wings snap open
circle once then gone

by the dry reverbed
a northward hunting survey
out of sight and mind

we finally got home
sweating and nearly fainting
from September’s heat

  1. Five-foot wing spans on those buzzards…humm…I’d probably be watching over my shoulder. 😉
Wow! Love your painting. It seems familiar to me. Have you posted it in the past? I fell in love with Tucson when vacationing in that area about 10 years ago. I went there specifically to see the saguaros.

    • Yes, I surreptitiously checked behind me. Yes, I’ve posted that painting previously, but with a different but similar poem. I haven’t been very inspired to paint anything new lately. I’m hoping to be inspired for new paintings sooner or later…; -)

The saguaros are still ubiquitous, but the fear is that the climate is changing to the point where they may not survive…; -/

      • I’m not painting as much either…maybe it’s catching. 😉
I’ve read that about the saguaros. The world has lost so much of its flora and fauna that I’m beginning to think modern humans are a blight on the planet. And on ourselves s well. Have you read that we all have microplastics in our bodies?

      • I don’t know that it’s catching, but perhaps more a function of age … at least for me… I just don’t feel as creative as I once did.

Yes, I’m aware of the microplastics. They permeate the environment, which in turn permeates our bodies as well. I’ve long maintained that humanity is the bane of all life on earth… another dead-end evolutionary cul-de-sac… on its way to extinction… sorry 😞
