Morpheus and His Sisters, Fate and Death
in my youth
Morpheus was
my companion and friend
justice, my main complaint
that is, whatever didn’t
go my way
later, Fate and Death
became players
sitting opposite me
at life’s game-board
challenging, complicating
my every move
now, Fate and Death
have become beautiful sirens
gently smiling faces
beckon me to lie down
in their sweet
languid embraces
I’m old enough now
lived more than
long enough to
realize their beauty
promised loving touch
enfolded in soft arms
they stand
leaning against reality’s edge
arms folded with loving smiles
knowing our time is near
just around the inevitable
last, next bend

Close friends have told me they find this poem morbid. I disagree. I found it enlightening, positively cathartic in the writing… What is this retasence of thinking about, or even referring to, our final, eternal friends, Fate and Death? –LE

King Solomon felt like that when he got older.
