First Sailing Lesson

Paradise Island –LE – Acrylic on canvas 18×24″

First Sailing Lesson

Boston Harbor
Skiff with a sail
Tacks into the wind
Easily

Grandpa shows
Me the ropes
Hand on the tiller
Eye on sail
Wind-rippled then pop

Dove off the stern
Tried to go deep
Bobbed to the
Surface like
Cork on a string

Mouth full of
Water I quickly
Spit out intense
Taste unexpected
Eww, SALT!

  1. There’s something magical about that painting.
My cousins tell me that when I first saw the sun setting on the ocean, I ran to the water trying to reach it. They had trouble catching up to me and pulling me out. I had to say bon voyage to my sandals that day.

    • Yes, I can identify with that experience… even when I was older… Glad you like the painting. It is based on a photo I took of Paris Island off the coast of South Carolina US. The person in the painting is my long-time companion. I called the painting ‘Paradise Island’. The water was the hardest to get ‘right’…; -)
