Taken In By Paternal Grandparents
We were taken in by my paternal grandparents (William and Dora). They converted their large chicken coop into a small cottage, where we lived for our first couple of years in Ohio. My grandparent’s place was located out on Antrim Road, technically in Elyria, but just south of the Lorain City limit, what Dad used to call, Stop 7, which I think referred to a bus stop, or some such designation.
My early memories are of a huge, sprawling place with two houses, the chicken coop house (cottage, that is), a large garden, dogs, cats, bee hives, and flowers (Gladiolas). My grandfather was a State Fair prize-winning beekeeper and Gladiola grower.
One of Dad’s sisters, Florence, along with her husband, Richard, who worked in the Open Hearth at U. S. Steel and later, her children lived in the other real house on the property. Others of Dad’s siblings, Ruth (the youngest), Bob, and Roberta (twins), were still living in the main house with his parents, Boo and Nana, to the grandchildren.
