Back to School – Memoir Continued

Back to School, the Coffeehouse, and School-life as Usual

Things at school pretty much returned to ‘normal’. Cindy was gone, and I resumed my school, coffeehouse, and performance schedules. During this time, I met and became friends with Fred K., known by many as ‘Bummer Fred’. He came into the Program Board meeting room while I was there one day and introduced himself. I don’t know for sure why, but he wanted to hang out with me and get high. He had been a chemistry major and claimed to be able to make his own LSD, though he never did while I knew him… as far as I know. He and I did plant a pot garden down in the Black River Reservation floodplain. We never got to harvest it, though. The last time I saw the garden, the plants were about 5’ high. The next time we went to check on them, all we found was a bare patch of ground. All the plants and all debris from them were completely gone. I never did find out what happened to them.

    • That was one of our conclusions. We also considered state of federal DEA squads, or perhaps boyscouts, searching the flood plane for just such stashes. They were using helacopters with infrared to search out such things back then. I mean, there was nothing left, not a twig, leaf, or seed, only bare brown earth in a perfect rectangle. We had about 2 dozen plants when I saw them last…; -)
