Anne – Part 8 – Sean is Born – Memoir Continued

Sean is Born

During this time, Anne became pregnant with our first. My insurance covered the delivery. Unlike Lynn, Anne wanted a doctor to do the delivery, though I was in the delivery room with her, holding her hand through the whole ordeal.

She went into labor in the afternoon one day in early October 1986. We spent that night and part of the next day in her hospital room until the birth became imminent. That evening Sean arrived.

A couple of months prior to the birth, Anne’s favorite uncle, John Rafe P., died of a heart attack. So, Anne wanted to name the baby after her uncle. I’ve never been fond of the name, John. So, we compromised. Half her heritage is Irish, and the other half is Slovinian. She suggested the Irish form of John, Sean. I agreed. Again, I didn’t particularly like the name Rafe for a middle name. So I suggested Raphael. She liked that, and our new son’s name was settled, Sean Raphael.

      • Just asked because I’ve always hated my first name. My middle name, Kathleen, is okay, and I’ve always been called some version of that. My stepdaughter’s middle name is Quinn. Her father named her after the song “Quinn the Eskimo”. 😆

      • Quinn… At least it’s unique. I’ve always thought creative people need interesting names. And if they weren’t lucky enough to have received one from their parents, then they should choose their own. That’s not really that unusual. Many cultures encourage the young to choose a new name during their rights of passage to adulthood…; -)

  1. Do you mean for myself? If so, then yes, I kind of did. I was named William Albert. While I didn’t change it in the leagal sense, I did go from being called Billy and Bill to Liam, the Celtic form… last half of William rather than the first half. No, my dad was not happy about it. Oh well…; -)
