Milky Skies, See What We See

Milky Skies, See What We See

milky skies for
our mid-day ride
misty-blue mountaintops
silhouettes in the south

northern mountains
not so misty, by half
and to our left
the dragon’s teeth glint
of the Tucson range

a roadrunner streaks
across our path
exits stage right
running in circles as we pass
as if caught in our slipstream
ha! a cyclist’s dream

human coyotes on electric bikes
are everywhere today
passing and resting beneath the trees
watch us with slitted eyes
looking for my roadrunner motor
an excuse for the chase
but there’s none on my machine
except the one thumping in my chest

gem show traffic makes
intersection transit slow
so end the ride and
go home, make lunch
relax and write poems
