Save Our VA Protest At Ajo Gate

We’ve been protesting the attempt to defund and privatize the VA, the current administration’s canceling of the union contracts (except for those of the so-called VA ‘security’ forces).

There were six of us this morning. We protest every Friday morning from 7:00 AM to around 8:30 AM for the VA’s morning shift-change. We get a positive response from most entering and leaving…

  1. Barely out of high school, my brother was drafted and sent to fight in the Vietnam War. He came home an alcoholic and plagued with nightmares. While he was there, he was exposed to Agent Orange, and later on, developed health problems because of it. If not for VA medical, he would have probably been drained dry financially.
You’re doing a good thing, Liam.

    • Thank you, Kate.

In my senior year of high school, we were all aware that we’d be drafted if we didn’t enlist. Our high school had recruiters from the four services come in and give those boys willing aptitude tests. I went for the Air Force since my dad’s youngest brother was a captain there; and that’s where they wanted me to go. I scored high in a couple of areas, and the recruiter offered me tempting service options, which my brother, when he enlisted, informed me were pure lies. They had made him promises too that they had no intention of keeping. He ended up at Danang during the mortar attacks that were in the news twice. He’s now on disability and suffers from PTSD. No, I didn’t go. When I went for the physical, they rejected me, supposedly based on my vision problems; even though I was in better shape than most of those they did take. Later, I received my draft card with a 1-Y status that a few years later was revised to 4-F. There were no explanations, ever. So, I went to school, first computer school, then community college. The rest resides in the pages of my memoir…

My companion was a ‘Wave’ in the Navy during that war and uses the VA for her primary care. As I mentioned, my brother uses the VA for all his needs as well. What can I do but support the VA?…; -)
