Fragments Of A Dream

Fragments Of A Dream

walked up to a
drive-thru kiosk
ordered a brew

walked away and noticed
five different diners
around the one kiosk

checked them all
but none had my order
what to do

walked away
after what seemed like
hours of scenic views

someone asked me
if I needed a ride
I said yes and climbed inside

driver seemed familiar
but couldn’t come up
with a name

dropped me near
a large highway
intersection

still had a hundred
miles to go
dream-miles, that is

walking through neighborhoods
that seemed familiar
but surely not mine

eyes fluttered open
as morning light gave
form to my room

stretched and swiveled
my feet out of bed
still remembered the dream

amazing

PS: I mentioned to a friend recently that I haven’t had a bad dream in years and that I seldom remember dreams anyway. But when I do, they are usually pleasant. This one was surprising because not only did I remember it, but I can still see it (well, most of it — it has started to fade).

  1. If I have an interesting dream, and can remember it on waking, whatever time that may be, I record a voice memo of it. My phone is always close at hand (I listen to an audiobook to help me fall asleep.) Some of my dreams have led to short stories, and one to a poem that is, if I remember correctly, around five pages long.
