Laying-on Paint
background music
to start – sonatas for
violin and guitar
canvas prepared
rough draft of
vision laid down
paints on palate
essential colors
mixed and ready
brush-tip drips color
laid on canvas and
shapes are rendered
with patient strokes
or dabbed and scraped
with palette knife bold
music changes as
sessions fly by
painting completed
in many winks of
the eye – studied
this playful vision
rendered with personal
flourishes and gestures
signed sealed delivered
then start again
in meditation

Stunning painting, Liam! Did you use acrylics?
Your poems puts me in mind of how I feel when painting, sort of zoned out, and hours can pass in no time.
I like your meditation garden…looks peaceful.

Thanks, Kate… yes, it’s all acrylics on a stretched canvas. I’m pleased you like it. It’s about 10 years old; painted it when I lived in Ashland, KY. The poem describes my usual painting process (doesn’t matter the medium I’m working in), which also describes my frame of mind when I’m writing. Yes, the meditation garden is very peaceful… I frequently use it to settle and center myself…; -)

Most welcome, Liam. 😊
I’ve been trying to meditate but without any success. My mind wanders too much.

That’s the purpose of the mantra… gently return to repeating it whenever you realize that your mind is wandering. It does take some practice and does get easier with time…; -)

To quote one of my old Senseis, “practice does not make perfect, but perfect practice does.”… One can oly hope…; -)
