February Morning Ride
first ride with electronic assist
heart attack hills no longer resist
blue sky above
marbled with
white fluffy clouds
while the vistas
north through south
butt up against mountains
river gorges and high passes
the main ways out
the interim planes filled with yellow
Brittlebush and Greasewood
like pastel paintings
landscapes hung to wow
only a few walkers and riders
in the morning chill
another slow-starting Sunday
among the hills
back home to heaviness
as our Chihuahua’s ancient
frame stumbled to greet us
slow and unsteady even when
let out to relieve himself
won’t eat, but a little water
his time is short
perhaps days
or even hours
but at least he doesn’t
seem to be in much pain

I’m so sorry about your dog. It’s hard watching them get old and struggle. I’ve been through it quite a few times. I haven’t had a pet in years, and now that I’m alone, I’ve thought about getting a cat, but can’t make up my mind.

Yes, it is hard. I’ve lost my two favorite pets in the last ten years, both cats, Moki, a gray tabby, and Ming, a blue point Siamese. I got both when they were young and watched them get old and feeble. Moki died at the age of 20 and Ming was 18… Both loving indore lap-cats…; -)

My last two cats were strictly indoor cats, and lived to be about 20 years old. Still miss them and others, all unique personalities.
