Excerpts From My Annual Birthday Meditation

Each year on my birthday, I meditate and deeply contemplate, not only the last year, but the whole of my life so far (that is, all that I can remember), how I got to where I am and my feelings about that…

This year, that happened while I was taking my break from posting. So, I’ll relate some of that now.

I wrote a long meditative poem detailing those consideration. Because of the ubiquity of AI in all of our media recently, I decided to give that meditation to an AI and have it put in the form of an e.e.comings poem. After that came back, I edited it, even though it was already nearly the same as what I’d submitted. The result is below.

I admire Comings for his flaunting the rules of our linguistic gatekeepers. Many ‘traditionalists’ don’t like Comings … all the better.

i
am turning (slowly) into
my next sun-spin
having just un-
wrapped the last layer of
old Sol.

(the meat of me is heavy now
and the bones
are forgetting how to pull)

even the wheel of my trike
will not yield
to these hands which used to know
the metal of things.

& hunger is a strange bird
always crying in the belly
but the food tastes like a closing door
before and after.

the skin (my largest house) is thinning
peeling back like wet paper
and the white stones of the mouth
are falling
one by one into the earth
(no matter how much i brush the ghosts).

the world is growing very loud and very
small.
the movies are empty boxes.
the television is a gray scream.
and the politics?
just angry children throwing dust at the sky.

even the voices of my own blood
feel like heavy coats i am too tired to put on.

is this
the end?
or an end?
or just the dropping of the capital letters
from my name?

dissolving back into the vast
un-
separated
cosmic
is-ness.

and yet
here in this quiet corner of the continuum
i am becoming
comfortable
with the leaving.

sooner   or   later
space-time bends back into itself.

i do not think of it too much (which is a small word for a big ocean).
i just let the wheel turn.

i am
(being)
gone
and arriving.
