Identity

Identity

All human Identify is
Based on stories
Stories we tell ourselves
Based on the stories
Handed down to us
Since the beginning of
Human communication

It’s how we establish
Our reality

These stories are based
On the selective information
We call ‘facts’
Our vested interests intact

Since there are no such things
As ‘facts’
Just perspectives
Agreed to by
Humans in charge

The ‘winners’
So to speak

But

In spite of the overall
General stories
We each have our own
Individual stories too
Just as ‘fact-free’ as
The general ones

Merely perspectives
Guiding the rendering of
Our masks
What we want or
Expect others to see
Protects our vulnerabilities
Our true realities

We are human
After all

PS: My perspective on this comes from my readings of anthropology, the theory of Evolution and particularly, Nietzsche and Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, who sets the beginning of our story-telling, myth-making, and all other ‘human’ fiction (what most humans call ‘reality’, but merely ‘persectives — Nietzsche) at the cognitive revolution, between 70 and 30-thousand years ago. Before that, there were no ‘nations’, supreme-beings, money, or any other of the fictions we moders think or as ‘real’.

  1. A very interesting poem that invites us to reflect on who we are and how we construct our identity. We often believe that our story is an absolute truth, when in reality it is also shaped by experiences, memories, and the way we see the world.

I especially like the idea of masks: we all show a part of ourselves to protect what we carry inside. In the end, behind our stories and perspectives, we are still human, with our doubts, wounds, and vulnerabilities.
