Nothing There…
An old sentiment, unfortunately
life on Starship Earth seems
to have only gotten worse…
While I continue to hope
for better tomorrows
they seem very far off…
Looking around on any given day,
surveying what human ‘civilization’ has wrought,
the consequence of our deepest philosophical thought…
As a tear forms in my eye,
spills and slides down my cheek,
I raise my hand to wipe it away
but there’s nothing there…

Very profound, Liam.
I don’t know if civilization has gotten worse, or that we now have news of world affairs in an instant instead of days, weeks, years, or sometime never in times past, that make us think humanity is in such a sorry state of decline. There has always been good and evil in the world, and looking back through history, one can see so much evil perpetrated on humans by humans that it’s staggering. I think a lot of people are in it for themselves, or are sheep, bowing to whichever way the wind blows…sometimes, just to survive.

Yes, Kate, what you say is all true. The difference is that throughout history, individual despots have created all kinds of ‘evils’ and suffering, but now fewer and fewer psycho-sociopaths have the ability with modern tech to completely destroy … at least human civilization on the planet, if not all or most ‘sentient’ life. That is the main motivation for this poem…; -) Thanks for reading and commenting, my friend 🙏

Yes, modern tech has the ability in the wrong hands to completely destroy mankind and the planet, not just a nation and its people. I hadn’t thought about that. I’m not a Biblical scholar, but if I recall correctly, after the Great Flood God said it wouldn’t be water next time, but fire. That could be construed as nuclear war.

That it could; but personally, I don’t give much sway to anything predicted in that contradictory piece of propaganda and mythology… just sayin’… I don’t believe anyone knows nor ever did know the future… or ever actually talked to God, never mind write down what IT told them, whatever they’ve imagined IT to be…; -) But, that said, fewer and fewer people now have that technical means to destroy it all despite biblical references, sadly… Thanks for commenting! You frequently bring other perspectives in for consideration that I’ve not considered, or simply forgotten. Thanks again…; -)

I’m agnostic, so I just don’t know. I lean toward your view on religion, but don’t think those who are true believers are idiots. We all have our own way to try and make sense of life, and who am I to say they are wrong and I am right?
